Controls

Your kart accelerates by itself. On touch screens, drag on the left side of the screen to steer (drag down to brake), hold the DRIFT button and tap ITEM to use your item; with a mouse, clicking the track also uses your item. On a keyboard, the Left and Right arrows or A and D steer, the Down arrow or S brakes, Space or Left Shift drifts and X, E or Enter uses your item. P or Esc pauses.

How to play Kart Chaos

Each race is 3 laps against five rivals: Blaze, Pickle, Nova, Tank and Wiggles. You start at the back of the grid, and after the countdown your kart speeds up on its own, so you only steer, brake and drift. The big number in the corner is your place, and a small map shows where everyone is.

Hold drift while you turn at speed and your kart slides into a drift. Sparks under the kart turn blue, then orange, then pink the longer you hold it. Let go to get a boost, and the hotter the sparks, the bigger the boost. You can’t start a drift off the road or when you are going slowly, and driving on the grass or sand cuts your top speed in half unless you are boosting.

Tracks, cups and items

There are 8 tracks in two cups. The Sugar Cup has Candy Circuit, Jungle Twist, Dune Dash and Frosty Peaks. The Inferno Cup has Lava Lair, Neon Nights, Beach Bash and Moon Base. Finish in the top three to win a gold, silver or bronze medal and unlock the next track. Gold is worth 3 medal points, silver 2 and bronze 1. Frosty Peaks is icy, and a few other tracks are a little slippery too.

Each lap has three rows of ? boxes. Drive through one to get an item, as long as your item slot is empty. A banana spins out the next kart that hits it. An oil slick makes karts slide and wobble. A shield guards you for a few seconds. A turbo can gives a quick burst of speed, and a homing rocket chases the kart one place ahead of you.

Tips and tricks

• Start drifting early on long corners and hold it until the sparks turn pink for the strongest boost.
• Drop bananas and oil when a rival is right behind you.
• When ROCKET INCOMING! flashes, a shield will block the hit. A shield stops one banana or rocket and keeps oil off you.
• A rocket locks on to the kart one place ahead of you, so fire it when that kart is close, not while you are leading.
• Before a race you can watch a short ad to start with a random item: a homing rocket, a turbo can or a shield.
• If you finish off the podium, you can watch a short ad once to retry the race right away with a boost start. If the ad is skipped you get nothing, but the button stays so you can try again.
