Listening to an old song that you used to like as a kid or watching your favorite childhood cartoons after a long time takes you back in time and gives you that crippling nostalgia. Well, that’s what retro gaming is all about. To collect and play old games that made your childhood a whole lot better since all you wanted to do after school was turn on your console and sit in front of the television for hours. Obviously, the gaming industry has come a long way in terms of graphics, gameplay, and other gaming aspects but there’s no denying the fact that games from the past seem just as enjoyable today as they were back in the day.
The term "retro gaming" doesn’t necessarily have a set-in-stone definition as the idea of what could be considered retro changes every year as newer games and higher-end technology are released. Loosely speaking, playing games on older consoles or playing games that came out many years back would fall into the definition of retro gaming. Games like the first Super Mario Bros or the first Sonic the Hedgehog games would certainly fall into this category as they’ve been around for several decades.
Now, the reason retro gaming remains so popular to this date is the fact that there’s just a certain charm to these older games that simply doesn’t fade away. The very first Legend of Zelda game wouldn’t be considered up to modern-day standards in terms of its graphics or even its gameplay mechanics but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth checking out. Yes, the game might not hold up in terms of technical specifications, but it still features some incredibly creative game design and intense moments that are just as enjoyable today as they were many years back when the game was first released.
The popularity and appeal of retro gaming are evident by the fact that there is a variety of ways for players to enjoy these games nowadays. Lots of games were released on older systems such as the Sega Genesis which may not work today. Thankfully, dedicated fans have created – or should we say “re-created” browser-based variants, or at least, programs that allow these old-but-gold games to run on modern systems; retro games that players can launch and enjoy for completely free.
Other than this, the fact that a lot of older games are remastered on a fairly regular basis or that many retro games are being reimagined by mostly indie devs in some very creative ways is a clear indicator that retro gaming is incredibly popular and this likely won’t change any time soon. There’s just a certain appeal to these games that simply do not change no matter how much time passes after their release or how many technological leaps we make.
All in all, retro gaming is a gaming niche that’s unique to someone on the outside, hopefully, this article was able to enlighten you regarding what retro gaming is and why it remains so popular to date.
