Games like "Call of Duty" and "Pro Evolution Soccer" have mass appeal today. And it's not rocket science to figure out why. After all, everyone loves realistic graphics and a fluid gaming experience. Still, arcade games continue to hold their ground in the grand scheme of things.
The nostalgia these classics evoke makes revisiting them worthwhile. Nothing really beats the memories, the bonds we formed, and the fame we achieved while playing these arcade games. Here are six such games that have updated versions. So the next time you fancy a trip down memory lane, just play one of these in your internet browser.
Cookie Monster
If you've seen Sesame Street, you're familiar with the Cookie Monster and his catchphrase "Me want cookie." At the same time, the Pac-Man game was all the rage after being released in 1980. The game's yellow character gobbled pellets constantly through a maze while avoiding the ghosts.
When you mix the Cookie Monster's gluttony with Pac-Man's gameplay, you have the Cookie Monster game. Using your arrow keys, players move him around the corridor to do what he loves best—Eat. And the cherry on top? When the Cookie Monster eats the baked goodies, it gives him the ability to eat the ghosts too!
Alien Invaders
Alien Invaders was a simple and engaging game that had many folks glued to their screens. The aim was straightforward; spaceships arranged in rows and columns had to be eliminated by the galaxy's hero—You. Equipped with a loaded spaceship, you had to destroy them while avoiding fire too.
Most levels of the game have a special spaceship that flew past. There's no missing their distinct red color, and destroying them gave players extra points. The ease of gameplay means all you need are the arrow keys to move your spaceship and the spacebar to return fire.
Neon Pinball
The popularity of the ''Neon Pinball'' game might be compared to how every phone these days has an app store. However, even the most skillful players needed an element of luck to perform exceptionally well. First, players have to push on the spacebar and release it to launch the ball and start the game.
The general aim is to keep the ball rolling for as long as possible while earning points. So players have two flippers to prevent the ball from dropping down the drain. Not to worry if the ball does go down the drain, though, because ''Neon Pinball'' offers multiple shots at beating high scores.
Classic Frog
The original version of this game was known as "Frogger." The gameplay involves leading your frog to the safety of the pads on the other side. However, that path has obstructions to surmount. First, players have to cross a road of alligators and turtles without touching them.
That's just one-half of the challenge, though. Once players get to the river's shore, they have to find a way to cross the river. Then, using the arrow keys again, the frog must piggyback on fishes swimming across the river until it's safe to hop on one of the lily pads. Interestingly, there is also a 60-second timer to add some difficulty.
Classic Snake
This is one game we're willing to bet most folks have played at some point. Even those who didn't probably found out about it somehow—many kids used to sneak away with their parent's flip phones to beat their high scores.
The objective is to feed the snake with eggs scattered and maintain it for as long as possible. The fun or challenging part is keeping the snake from gliding headlong into any part of its body; because that would mean the end of the game and start from scratch. So, how long can you go, and what's your highest score ever?
Tetro Classic
Ever since its release in 1980, Tetris remains one of the most timeless games ever. As a result, many games have been based on Tetris' design. One of them is "Tetro Classic." Although the original version used drab colors for the tetrominoes, even early testers quickly became hooked.
Decades have passed, and the era of Game Boys is over. Now, we have more powerful devices with far more vibrant colors. But Tetro Classic still uses the left and right arrows to place the tetromino like the original game. Interestingly, this version also includes a bomb to destroy tetrominoes.
